Why Art in Health Centres and Hospitals?
Research has shown that having art in hospitals can provide the following benefits:
Supports mental wellness
Lowers blood pressure and pain levels
Decreases heart rate and stress levels
IImproves attitude towards the health care environment/experience
Connects the hospital to its community
Provides a welcome distraction for patients, staff, families
Motivates patients to walk around and be active within health centres and hospitals
Makes the hospital environment more welcoming and human
Improves wayfinding for patients and families

Mill Woods Community Health Centre Art Acquisition Project
Deadline for Submissions: February 28, 2025
Covenant Health, Covenant Foundation, and the University Hospital Foundation invite artists in Edmonton and the Capital Region to submit artworks for consideration for permanent placement in the Mill Woods Community Health. The selected artworks will be placed within the corridors, waiting rooms, and units throughout the new Health Centre for the benefit of patients, families, and staff.
The artworks selected must meet the following criteria:
Reflect the diverse communities that will be served by the Mill Woods Community Health Centre. These communities include, but are not limited to, Indigenous, Punjabi, Ukrainian, Middle Eastern, African, Spanish, French, Russian, Chinese communities.
Must impact viewers in positive ways, such as through messaging, history, highlighting culture, inspiring calm or hope, or engaging a community in an artwork’s creation.
Is in good condition.
Content, images, colour, and size are appropriate for the health centre.
Only original, two- or three-dimensional painting, drawing, print, photograph, mixed media, or other media will be considered.
Only original prints and photographs, preferably hand-pulled of small editions (usually less than 100), printed and framed using archival quality materials will be accepted. (Reproductions or poster prints will not be accepted.)
Created by a professional artist or an accomplished amateur artist whose work maintains the consistency and integrity of the Covenant Health art collection.
Mill Woods Community Health Centre
The Community Health Centre is the first phase of the Covenant Wellness Community development. Scheduled for completion in 2025, the three-storey building will include approximately 190,000 square feet of space for health-related services, including several clinics transferred from the Grey Nuns Community Hospital and a primary care centre. This innovative, multi-generational, multi-purpose health centre will include:
medical/surgical clinics
outpatient mental health services
a diabetes education centre
outpatient cardiac rehabilitation, a preadmission clinic and a surgical booking office
a conference education centre, public space, and administration and building support services
Retail services will provide wraparound supports for patients and families visiting the health centre.

The University Hospital Foundation’s Arts in Health programs aim to enhance the wellbeing of patients, families, and staff through innovative, engaging arts programs. We use the arts to assist in the healing process by fostering connection, inspiring imagination, and encouraging resilience.
Eligible Artwork Specifications
The locations for these artworks will be within the Mill Woods Community Health Centre corridors, waiting rooms, and units. We are seeking artwork by Edmonton and Capital Region artists that is appropriate in terms of size, style, and content. Artworks may be related to the cultural experiences and stories of the Mill Woods community, including but not limited to, Indigenous, Punjabi, Ukrainian, Middle Eastern, African, Spanish, French, Russian, and Chinese communities.
The ideal artwork(s) would meet the following criteria:
Two-dimensional works, including but not limited to: painting, drawing, original prints, photography, and fibre art.
All media suitable to a wall mounted installation with framing, glazing, or other methods of encasement will be considered.
Artwork dimensions
Many locations have been identified for works within the following scale range:
24” to 48” (70 - 90 cm) high
24” to 48” (55 cm - 6.5 m) wide
There are select number of locations that can accommodate larger works, within the following scale range:
60” to 84” (152cm to 214cm) high
60” to 84” (152cm to 214cm) high
Content reflecting one or more of the following:
The diversity of the Mill Woods communities
A sense of familiarity, respite, and comfort
Intellectual engagement, interest, and/or narrative
Colourful, whimsical, uplifting, soothing, or inspirational
Series of artworks will be considered.
Artworks must be created using archival materials.
Artworks must be available for purchase.
Value: $500-$5,000 per artwork/series (Note: the total value must include shipping/delivery).
Copyright and exhibitions rights:
The artist(s) must guarantee that the work is original and does not violate the copyright of another person.
The copyright of the artwork shall be and remains with the artist.
The artist will grant and license to Covenant Health and the Covenant Foundation:
the right to exhibit the artwork(s) in public in perpetuity, and;
The right to use images of the artwork(s) for promotional, educational, and non-commercial uses.
Galleries and agents are encouraged to submit work of artists from Alberta. At this moment, we ask that you limit your submission to five artists.
Submissions must be submitted no later than 11:59 pm on February 28, 2025
The submissions will be evaluated by a jury. The jury’s decision is final. Only artists whose work is eligible and appropriate for the Mill Woods Community Health Centre will be contacted.
*University Hospital Foundation will retain the right to hold copies of images and information submitted to create an artists’ roster for the remainder of the art purchasing project.
