The Friends of University Hospitals seek volunteer board members who represent diverse perspectives in Edmonton and who demonstrate excellence in their field of expertise, bringing to our non-profit a mix of leadership skills, care, and vision critical to due diligence and good governance. Our organization is currently rebuilding its programming and funds after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Established in 1986 and evolved from compassionate care programs dating back to 1906, our mission is to use the arts and social enterprise to enhance wellness in the University of Alberta Hospital community, inspiring wholeness and creating meaningful connections. We operate McMullen Gallery, The Artists on the Wards program, and maintain the public art collection in the hospital. We administrate the Nancy Lieberman Memorial Fund and fundraise primarily using a retail model including one shop and various pop-ups throughout the site.
Emphasis will be on the recruitment of candidates who have the time, interest in arts and health non-profits, and experience to make a significant impact on the long-term performance of The Friends. Special consideration will be given to those with the following experience:
Accounting
Legal
Fundraising and sponsorship
Working with vulnerable populations
Expectations:
Friends’ board members take on a two-year term, with the possibility for renewal for additional terms. The board meets 9 times per year (off for July, August, and December) and produces our Annual General Meeting each June. Time commitment will be approximately 6 hours per month, as each Director is also required to hold a seat on, at minimum, one board sub-committee.
